Description

This Tater Tot Casserole with Ground Beef delivers hot, crunchy tater tots, a savory beef and vegetable filling, and gooey cheese in every bite.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 450 g ground beef (1 lb, 85% lean)
  • 1 medium yellow onion (about 150 g, diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 200 g frozen mixed vegetables (2 cups)
  • 305 g condensed cream of mushroom soup (10.5 oz can)
  • 120 ml milk (1/2 cup)
  • 120 g sour cream (1/2 cup)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (15 ml)
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • Salt to taste
  • 200 g shredded cheddar cheese (2 cups)
  • 100 g shredded mozzarella cheese (1 cup)
  • 907 g frozen tater tots (32 oz)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F). Lightly oil the baking dish or spray with nonstick spray. Remove the frozen tater tots from the freezer.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp neutral oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef, cook until browned, about 6–8 minutes. Drain excess fat, leaving 1 tbsp in the pan.
  3. Add diced onion and sauté for 4–5 minutes until translucent. Add minced garlic and frozen vegetables, sauté for 2 minutes. Season with Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, and salt.
  4. Stir in the condensed cream of mushroom soup and milk. Cook over low heat for 2–3 minutes until smooth and slightly thickened. Remove from heat and fold in sour cream and shredded cheddar until combined.
  5. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread evenly. Top with shredded mozzarella, then arrange frozen tater tots in a single layer on top.
  6. Bake for 30–35 minutes until bubbling and golden brown. Tent with foil if browning too quickly. For extra crisp, broil for 1–2 minutes.
  7. Let rest for 8–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with chopped green onions or parsley if desired.

Notes

Letting the casserole rest after baking helps set the filling for cleaner slices. This dish can be made ahead and refrigerated for up to 24 hours before baking.
