Description

A foolproof Southern Cornbread recipe that’s golden, buttery, and slightly sweet, perfect for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar (optional)
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3 tbsp melted butter
  • 12 tbsp honey
  • 1 cup creamed corn (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (218°C) with a 10–12 inch cast iron skillet inside, adding 2–3 tbsp butter to melt.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk buttermilk, eggs, melted butter, and honey. Fold in creamed corn if desired.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined.
  5. Carefully remove the hot skillet, pour in the batter, and bake for 20–25 minutes until golden.
  6. Let cool for 5 minutes, slice, and serve warm.

Notes

For best results, ensure your skillet is well-seasoned and always preheat it properly for a crispy crust. You can customize with add-ins like cheese or jalapeños.
