A comforting French-inspired beef stew with caramelized onions and cheesy bread that warms the soul.
Ingredients

- 2 lbs beef stew meat
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 cup red wine (optional)
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 8 slices of French bread
- 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
Instructions
- Prep your ingredients by dicing onions and mincing garlic.
- In a large pot, brown the beef stew meat in batches, about 5-7 minutes per batch.
- Add sliced onions to the pot and cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes. Add minced garlic a minute before removing from heat.
- Add the beef back into the pot with onions, then pour in the beef broth, red wine, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
- Cover and let it simmer on low heat for at least 1.5 hours, stirring occasionally.
- Preheat your oven to broil. Ladle the stew into oven-safe bowls, top with bread slices and shredded Gruyère cheese.
- Broil in the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly, about 3-5 minutes.
Notes
Serve the stew with a sprig of fresh thyme or parsley for presentation.
