Description

Philly Cheesesteak Sloppy Joes combine the juicy, flavorful elements of a classic sloppy joe with the cheesy, savory goodness of a Philly cheesesteak.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound lean beef, 90/10 blend
  • 12 slices provolone cheese, divided
  • 6 brioche buns, store-bought or homemade
  • 1 small white onion, chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup beef stock
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet set over medium heat, melt the butter. Add the chopped onions and green bell peppers. Cook, stirring frequently, for 6 to 7 minutes until the vegetables are softened but not browned.
  2. Add the ground beef to the skillet. Use a wooden spoon to break it into small pieces while cooking. Brown the meat thoroughly for about 5 to 6 minutes.
  3. Stir in beef stock, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, kosher salt, and black pepper. Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 4 to 5 minutes until it thickens into a rich, saucy consistency.
  4. Stack 6 slices of provolone cheese and cut them into approximately 1/2-inch pieces using a chef’s knife on a cutting board.
  5. Just before serving, stir the cut provolone cheese pieces into the hot sloppy joe mixture, allowing them to melt into the savory sauce.
  6. Toast the brioche buns in a toaster or toaster oven. Place the remaining 6 provolone slices on each toasted bun half. Spoon generous portions of the cheesy sloppy joe mixture onto the cheese-covered bottom buns, then top with the other bun halves. Serve warm.
  7. Store leftover sloppy joe mixture in the refrigerator for 4 to 5 days or freeze it up to 3 months. Reheat gently in the microwave or a skillet with a splash of water or stock. Thaw frozen portions in the microwave if needed.
