- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup cornstarch (optional)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- Gel food colors (for pattern)
- Powdered sugar (for dusting)
- Filling (whipped cream, buttercream, or ganache)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a jelly roll pan with parchment and lightly grease it.
- Separate eggs and measure flour, sugar, and any cornstarch.
- Make a small portion of thicker batter for the pattern.
- Pipe the heart motif onto the parchment and freeze for 5-10 minutes.
- Prepare the main sponge batter and pour it over the set pattern.
- Bake for 10-14 minutes until the sponge springs back lightly.
- Immediately invert and roll the sponge in a towel dusted with powdered sugar.
- Cool for about 20 minutes, then unroll and apply filling.
- Re-roll and chill for 30-60 minutes before slicing.

For best results, practice the rolling technique with a plain sponge first. Ensure filling is not too runny to prevent soggy seams.
