Description

An irresistible dish featuring layers of velvety Gruyère cheese, sweet caramelized onions, and tender potatoes, perfect for family gatherings or cozy dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds Yukon gold or russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat and add the sliced onions. Cook until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Whisk to combine.
  4. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the potatoes, half of the caramelized onions, and half of the Gruyère cheese. Pour half of the cream mixture over the layers.
  5. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients: potatoes, onions, cheese, and cream.
  6. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
  7. Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.

Notes

For a lighter version, substitute heavy cream with half-and-half. A mandoline slicer can help achieve uniformly sliced potatoes for even cooking.
