Description
An irresistible dish featuring layers of velvety Gruyère cheese, sweet caramelized onions, and tender potatoes, perfect for family gatherings or cozy dinners.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds Yukon gold or russet potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- Fresh thyme or parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a skillet, melt the butter over medium heat and add the sliced onions. Cook until they are golden brown and caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Whisk to combine.
- In a greased baking dish, layer half of the potatoes, half of the caramelized onions, and half of the Gruyère cheese. Pour half of the cream mixture over the layers.
- Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients: potatoes, onions, cheese, and cream.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
- Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
Notes
For a lighter version, substitute heavy cream with half-and-half. A mandoline slicer can help achieve uniformly sliced potatoes for even cooking.
