Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • Red gel food coloring (to desired hue)
  • Crushed candy canes (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Measure out the ingredients.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar together until smooth and fluffy.
  3. Incorporate wet ingredients (egg, vanilla, and peppermint).
  4. Mix the dry ingredients in a separate bowl, then combine with wet ingredients.
  5. Divide and mix in red gel food coloring into half of the dough.
  6. Chill the wrapped dough in the refrigerator for 1 hour.
  7. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) and roll out the colored dough into ropes, twisting to form candy cane shapes.
  8. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until just set, then let cool before serving.
