Mint Green Baby Hooded Sweater Free Crochet Pattern

I’ve been looking for the perfect hooded baby cardigan pattern for months now, and this mint green sweater is the one I keep coming back to. The scalloped edges, the cozy hood, the button front closure. It checks every box for a handmade baby gift that looks store-bought but feels like a warm hug.
This is my favourite style of baby sweater construction because it works from the top down in one seamless piece. No fussy seaming of separate panels. No guessing if the sleeves will match the body. You just start at the neckline and work your way down, watching the little cardigan take shape row by row.
Whether you’re making this for a baby shower, a grandchild, or that friend who just announced their pregnancy, this pattern delivers impressive results with straightforward techniques. Let me walk you through everything you need to know.
About This Baby Hooded Cardigan Pattern
This adorable mint green baby cardigan features a top-down raglan construction, which means you start at the neckline and work downward. The body and sleeves grow together until you reach the underarms, then you divide and finish each section separately. A cozy hood gets picked up along the neckline and seamed at the top. The signature scalloped border finishes the hem, cuffs, hood opening, and front bands for that polished, professional look.
The fabric is dense half double crochet throughout, creating a sturdy but soft texture that’s perfect for keeping little ones warm. Five small buttons close the center front, and the whole piece works up in approximately 8 to 12 hours for an experienced crocheter.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated intermediate. You should be comfortable with:
If you’ve made a basic sweater or worked a raglan hat before, you have all the skills you need. The scallop border is a simple three-step shell that adds gorgeous detail without complexity.

Materials Needed
Yarn: DK weight, approximately 300 (330, 370, 410) yards / 275 (300, 340, 375) meters in mint green
Hook: US size G-6 / 4.0 mm
Notions: Yarn needle, 5 small buttons approximately 3/8 in / 10 mm diameter, stitch markers (at least 4), scissors
Recommended Yarn Options
1. Lion Brand Pound of Love (100% acrylic, 1020 yards per 16 oz skein) in color Pastel Green. Machine washable, very soft against infant skin, widely available.
2. Paintbox Yarns Simply DK (100% acrylic, 137 yards per 50 g ball) in color Spearmint Green. Consistent twist, great stitch definition, affordable.
3. Cascade 220 Superwash (100% superwash merino wool, 220 yards per 100 g skein) in color Mint. Luxuriously soft, excellent drape, machine washable on gentle cycle.
Choose a smooth DK weight yarn with minimal halo so the half double crochet stitch definition remains visible. Avoid bulky or fuzzy fibers that will obscure the scallop trim detail.
Gauge
16 hdc x 12 rows = 4 in / 10 cm in half double crochet, blocked
Gauge matters for garments! Make a swatch and adjust your hook size up or down as needed to match. This ensures your finished sweater will fit properly.
Abbreviations Used
Before we dive into this step by step crochet pattern, let’s define all the abbreviations:
Special Stitch: Scallop Border
This decorative edging creates those beautiful waves you see at the hem, cuffs, and hood. Here’s how to work it:
Step 1: Join yarn with a sl st in the first st.
Step 2: Ch 1, sc in the same st.
Step 3: Sk 1 st, work 5 dc in the next st (this creates the shell).
Step 4: Sk 1 st, sc in the next st.
Step 5: Rep Steps 3 and 4 across or around the edge, ending with a sc. Fasten off.
The scallop border requires a stitch count divisible by 4, plus 1 extra stitch for the final sc. Don’t worry, the pattern tells you exactly how to adjust your pickup counts where needed.

Front Band and Button Loops
With RS facing, join yarn at the lower right front corner.
Right Front Band (button loop side): Ch 1. Work sc evenly up the right front edge, placing 1 sc per row end. You should have approximately 26 (28, 30, 32) sc up the right front body, then continue up the hood opening edge.
At the hood edge: Place a marker after the 3rd sc from the bottom. Place 4 additional markers evenly spaced, each approximately 5 (5, 6, 6) sc apart. At each marked position, work ch 2, sk 2 sc (button loop made). Continue sc to the top of the hood face opening. Fasten off.
Left Front Band (button side): With RS facing, join yarn at the top left front corner. Work sc evenly down the entire left front edge mirroring the right band. Fasten off.
Sew 5 buttons to the left front band opposite the button loops.
Scallop Edging
Bottom Hem: With RS facing, join yarn at the lower right front corner. Work sc along the entire bottom edge of the body. Count sts. Adjust to the nearest multiple of 4 plus 1 if needed. Then work the scallop stitch sequence across the entire bottom hem. Fasten off.
Cuffs: Join yarn at the underarm join point of one sleeve cuff. Pick up sc around the cuff, adjusting to nearest multiple of 4 plus 1: 17 (21, 21, 25) sc. Work scallop border in the round, joining at end. Fasten off. Repeat for second sleeve.
Hood Face Opening: Join yarn at the right front top corner of the hood opening. Work sc evenly around the face opening of the hood. Adjust to nearest multiple of 4 plus 1. Work one round of scallop stitch around the hood opening. Fasten off.
Finishing Your Baby Cardigan
Weave in all ends securely, especially at sleeve joins and hood seam.
Blocking: Wet block by submerging the finished sweater in cool water, gently pressing out excess water in a towel, and pinning flat to a foam mat. Pin the scallop edges open slightly to accentuate the shell detail. Allow to dry completely.
Buttons: Sew buttons firmly with doubled thread, stitching through all layers of the front band.
Care Instructions
Machine wash cold on gentle cycle if using superwash or acrylic yarn. Lay flat to dry. Do not hang wet. Do not tumble dry on high heat. If using non-superwash wool, hand wash only.
Size Customization Tips
To add chest width: Add 4 sts to the back and 2 sts to each front at the foundation chain, and continue raglan increase rows 1 to 2 additional times.
To lengthen the body: Work additional even rows before the scallop hem. Each 2 rows adds approximately 0.67 in.
To lengthen the sleeves: Work additional even rounds before the cuff edging.
To size up to 2T or 3T: Add 2 additional raglan increase rows to the yoke, extend body length to 11.5 to 12 in from neck, and extend sleeve length to 8.5 to 9 in.
